"Do you know," says Mona, with a slight shiver, and a little nervous laugh, pressing closer to her side, "I have lost half my courage of late? I seem to be always anticipating evil." "Yet, I am letting him go free that he may be the perpetrator of even greater crimes." "Don't be afraid. It is quite the correct thing to be eccentric nowadays. They had topped a wooded hill and were descending into a wide green valley, studded with clumps of red willows and sloping towards a winding stretch of pale green rushes through which the white face of the creek flashed as though in a smile of welcome.
