“Yes, there goes a steamer to the east, and a beautiful boat lies right near here, and far out there is sail after sail.” She wept to the memory of times past, and there was a romantic sadness in her feelings, luxurious and indefinable. Madame behaved to Julia with the tenderest attention, and endeavoured to withdraw her thoughts from their mournful subject by promoting that taste for literature and music, which was so suitable to the powers of her mind. “Oh, that? “Far from it,” answered Johnny Blossom, somewhat offended. “All right,” was all he said. “But let’s find the mouth of the tunnel. Hustle up with the grub.” The talk went on mostly about the Canyon. Bob noticed, however, that Jerry King took very little part in the conversation. He didn’t seem exactly unwilling to talk, but his remarks were few and far between. And when they came they were short and matter of fact. Mr. Whitney appeared not to notice this much. It was rather as if he was used to Jerry’s manner. But Bob, however, felt that he was going to have a hard job in thawing out this chap who was to be his companion through the summer. He wanted to make friends but Jerry seemed to repulse every advance he made. “Lucky stiff!” he said pleasantly. “Beat me to it, didn’t you?”.
