"I daresay," replied Maurice, coolly. "The more so, as I believe he has stolen the devil-stick." I took possession of it and carried it to a bench in the garden that backs up against the purple sprayed lilacs and is flanked by two rows of tall purple and white iris that stand in line ready for a Virginia reel with a delicate row of the poet's narcissus across the broad path. They always remind me of very stately gentlemen, and I have wondered if the little narcissus weren't shaking their ruffles at them. "I am sure of that," remarked Jen, taking the devil-stick off the table. "And you stole this, I'll be bound.".

Away they sped down the stony stairs with a great clatter of board and flutter of skirts, winding up at the bottom with a final heavy thump. "Dr. Etwald! Do you think he has anything to do with it?" queried Jen, perplexed and a trifled startled. The dancing was beginning as Patricia made her way slowly across the great room to the laughing group where she had seen Doris Leighton but a moment ago, and before she was halfway across Doris and a tall Turk swung past her in the whirl of the newest dance, followed by Elinor and Aladdin, and then by Griffin and the young king of the Black Isles.
