The boy looked very little as he stood with his knees shaking before the big Principal. “It certainly is going to be some big dam,” said Bob, waving his hand over the work spread out below them. “How high is it going to be?” “We can tackle the Labyrinth if it isn’t too far away.”.

Wide open stood the park gates, wide open the heavy, richly wrought gates to the courtyard, where the fountain was splashing musically; wide open, too, the great entrance doors and all the doors between the rooms, so that light and air streamed once more through the long-closed mansion. Very big and beautiful it looked in the bright sunshine, and its curtains fluttering in the summer wind seemed to be waving a welcome from the windows. Billy had been a sport! He had shot Bob just as far over as he could and the boy was correspondingly grateful. This way of taking it was rather disconcerting to Bob Hazard. He had hoped his father would be a little angry, perhaps, at the news of his decision. And if he had, Bob could have stuck to his determination with more heart, for he would have felt he had been treated a little unjustly. But his father’s acceptance of the situation left him without any defense. Besides, the note of disappointment which was so evident, convinced him that from his father’s standpoint he was ungrateful for the love and care he had received. CHAPTER XI TROUBLE.
