“Jiminy whiz! This is my very last week of boy; next week I’ll have to be a man,” he said gloomily. It was a fine summer evening. The whole Wopp family was getting ready to go to a dance, to be held at a ranch some ten miles off. An array of clean clothing was laid out on the different beds and an odor of musk-scented soap pervaded the air. Moses Wopp, not quite reconciled to this unexpected order of things, as it seemed to involve a protracted fast for his already clamoring stomach, nevertheless made haste to obey his father’s instructions. But Mrs. Bennett wasn’t blaming any one; she didn’t really know what the excitement was all about. At this moment the dining-room door opened and the daughter of the house entered the room. Suddenly, all heads were raised and a sigh of satisfaction escaped Mrs. Wopp’s lips. “Bully fer you, ’s Gordon,” shouted the excited Moses leaping furiously. “Keep her goin’.
