The larger of the two men grunted a surly response and with much pushing and swearing they began to laboriously back out of the blind channel. Jim Scroggie entered the school yard with his sister by his side. Elgin Scraff was the first to slide down and approach the new boy in a spirit of fellowship. He mused a little with his eyes fastened upon the ship's decks. For a space he was deeply sunk in thought. Presently his eyes rose to the figure before him, and he examined him as curiously as though he had never before seen him. "You bet!" came the spontaneous answer. "Fact, Jack. Seems to me them young Scotians don't scare very easy. However," sliding off the boat, "that ain't gettin' ready for the apple gatherin'. Let's go and mosey up some sacks and get the others in line.".
